Mario Santa Rita needs very little introduction, but we reckon since he gave us an hour of his time for a chat and a coffee, the least we could do was offer him some exposure.
So, the man started his career as a professional and semi-pro musician way back in the 90’s when he jammed on international stages with artists such as Leuba Ramagolo, Steve Kekane and One Fine Day.
He toured the international circuit for a number of years as a guitarist and performed in front of large crowds in Botswana, South Africa and has shared the stage with big names in the industry including Prime Circle, Leanie May, Mango Groove, Clint and Company, Matthys Roets, Hugh Masekela, and Elandrè.
Tzaneen residents will know him as the talented bass player and vocalist for local rock and contemporary outfit, Framus.
Mostly known for his skill on the guitar, Mario’s unique vocals were soon noticed by his fellow artists and it wasn’t long before he added backing vocals to his repertoire.
“I love music, but in our country, being a musician is more of a “side-hustle” as the youngsters call it. Well, fortunately for me, I am now in the advantageous position where I get to make music for a living which means I get to do what I love every day, and we know what they say about loving what you do.”
A month ago Mario joined the team at Merensky High School’s distinguished MDDK (music, dance, drama and art academy) where he is the official guitar tutor to young muso’s from the area.
“Man, I get excited when I see the level of interest among the youngsters that cross the threshold of the MDDK. Music is not dead and there are some seriously talented kids in our town. It gives me hope when you hear a 16-year-old listening to Queen or the Beatles.”
But that’s not all. Mario has just recently upgraded the flatlet on his property in Maritz Street to accommodate his other students who cannot attend his classes at the MDDK. He offers lessons in Bass Guitar, Rhythm Guitar and keyboard and makes a hell of a cup of coffee in between his dad duties.
Mario has a few spaces available for anyone interested in learning to play an instrument, or improving their musicianship, and can be contacted on 073 043 6852 via phone call or WhatsApp.
