A police sergeant stationed at the Phalaborwa SAPS was suspended after allegedly supplying liquor and marijuana to the inmates in the police holding cells on New Year’s Eve.

After consuming the illicit substances, the intoxicated inmates reportedly started assaulting and raping the other inmates in the cells. According to the police, six counts of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm (GBH) and two counts of rape were opened.

However, the sergeant responsible for the inmates’ intoxication was not arrested as according to the Police spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo, “no criminal case was opened against the sergeant, and he was therefore not arrested. He was however suspended in accordance with our internal disciplinary processes.”

According to Mojapelo two suspects aged 23 and 39, one in custody for murder, and the other for robbery, were subsequently arrested and charged with rape and assault GBH.

The inmates appeared in the Phalaborwa Magistrate court last week Friday, the 7th of January, and their cases were postponed to next week, the 18th of January.
