Ever tried eating without being able to see what it is that you are being served? On Friday evening a group of diners at Tzaneen Country Lodge joined the Lions Club for an evening of fine dining without sight in a bid to raise awareness of the plight of those who live with blindness and impaired sight.

Diners were treated to a three-course meal, served in the dark, and only after all those seated were blindfolded. The courses were specifically designed to make the experience all the more daunting by combining interesting textures such as the starter which consisted of smoked salmon on a bed of mashed potatoes. Guests were however given a menu to warn them of the dishes that they would be served, but the menu was in Braille.

The main course was a curried chicken wrap which made trying to eat it even more difficult considering its shape. Desert was a jelly and crumbed tart of sorts. Not being able to see what they were eating proved a task too much for some of the guests who ditched the eating utensils and opted to use their hands instead.

Funds were raised for the Lions Club’s Operation Brightsight, through an auction at the end of the evening. The proceeds raised during the event will be used to further this cause. At the time of going to print it was not clear how much money was raised. This is the second time that the Dinner in the Dark event was hosted in Tzaneen.
