Mud, mud and more mud was at the order of the day during last weekend’s 4×4 Family Fun Day held near the Bushveld Hunters and Wildlife Conservation Association grounds just on the outskirts of Tzaneen. A total of 27 entrants took the opportunity to showcase their extreme off-road capabilities and much to the delight of the spectators, put their magnificent beasts through their paces.

This event which was hosted by the parents of the Ben Vorster High School grade 11 pupils as a fundraiser for the school’s Matric Farewell ceremony later this year, attracted old and young, and was considered a roaring success. According to the organizing committee, they needed to raise about a R100 000 in order to host the matric farewell, and Saturday’s event certainly contributed adequately to bringing them closer to this target.

The 4×4 Family Fun Day consisted of three classes, namely Factory, Extreme and Side-by-Side. Stephen Bisscho and his co-driver Jacques Bisscho literally flung mud pies into the faces of their rivals to claim the win in the Extreme class. Riaan Smith conquered the various obstacles, rather effortlessly he would later say, to claim victory in the Side-by-Side class while the winners’ laurels in the Factory class went to the couple, Jaco and Natashia Beukes.

The organizers not only lauded the good heartedness of each and every person that came out in support of this event, but also Stephen Bisscho who gave up his prize to be auctioned o and then contributed the amount towards the school’s fund. This event proved not only popular among the competitors, but also attracted immense support from spectators and the local business community. So much so, in fact, that it was already considered to host a second event in the coming months.
